Le sujet de cette chronique engagée va être la photographie. Non la photographie n’est pas un art
mineur, mais, tout simplement un art à part entière. Comme la peinture, comme la musique et
l’architecture. On peut penser que de prendre une photo est simple, surtout, aujourd’hui avec le
matériel disponible sur le marché, mais il n’en ait rien. La technique photographique n’est là que
pour alimenter le regard du photographe, c’est lui qui décide du message qu’il veut faire passer à
travers, sa photo, son art. Toutes les écoles photographiques sont là pour exprimer quelques choses,
prenons quelques exemples,

la photographie de mode, vous faire croire que le modèle présenté est celui qui vous faut, même si
vous êtes un peu critique, vous vous rendrez vite fait, que le monde de la mode est très machiste,
avec une image de la femme et un peu moins de l’homme doit être une silhouette parfaite, même si
elles sont anorexiques. Ces images de mode veulent nous inculquer un modèle standardisé de nos
corps, et sans doute de nos pensées, même si quelques créateurs de mode, dernièrement, ont
ouvert comme ils disent, à la diversité en montrant des mannequins blacks, beurs et voir des femmes
un peu rondes, mais juste dans une certaine limite, il ne faut pas exagérer quand même. Alors de
l’art la photo de mode, je suis quelque fois bluffé par l’esprit créatif des photographes de mode. Pour
en avoir fait un peu dans les année 1975 (juste du catalogue, je vous rassure et cela n’a pas duré
longtemps, une contrat) , on pouvait sur certaines photos, nous laissait délirer, mais, si on ne
rentrait pas dans le moule, on se faisait jeter rapidement. Alors de l’art la photo de mode oui sans
doute mais un art détourné, codifié au service d’un autre art qu’est la création de mode lui-même
asservi à des codes forts et au main d’une élite financière lorsque on voit le prix des créations

Autre domaine, mais encore là, est-on sur de la création artistique ou non. Pour moi, c’est clair c’est
non . La photo publicitaire est là pour « prendre la part de votre cerveau disponible » pour vous faire
consommer. Pourtant, là aussi, il m’arrive, assez rarement, de trouver certaines photos publicitaires
artistiques, très bien faites. Oui, mais ce qui est gênant (et c’est un doux euphémisme), c’est le
message derrière, véhiculé par ces photos. Je me rappel d’une campagne publicitaire d’E.D.F avec
des affiches où on voyait une centrale nucléaire au milieu d’une prairie verte et en arrière-plan très
loin derrière, des éoliennes. Le message avait, au moins, le mérité d’être clair ; d’abord le nucléaire,
et après, éventuellement, les éoliennes ou les énergies renouvelables, et puis le vert pour faire
passer le message que E.D.F était écolo. Le problème, c’est que l’on peut tous se faire avoir, car
aujourd’hui, nous n’avons aucune éducation au décryptage des images. De plus, avec la profusion
des images, est ce que on prend encore du temps pour réfléchir aux messages qu’il y a derrière toute
image ou photo, surtout dans ce monde de zapping perpétuel.

Changeons de registre et prenons de la hauteur, allons vers d’autres domaines photographiques où
on peut affirmer, sans équivoque que l’on est là, dans une démarche artistique, porteuse d’un réel
message avec lequel, on peut être d’accord ou pas d’accord. Cela, c’est à chacun de se positionner.
Juste pour commencer une citation de Stephen Shore, photographe américain contemporain qui
photographiait le banal « Voir quelques chose de spectaculaire et le reconnaître comme une
possibilité photographique ne représente pas une très grande avancée, mais voir quelque chose
d’ordinaire, quelques chose que vous verriez tous les jours et le reconnaître comme une possibilité
photographique, c’est ce qui m’intéresse ». C’est tout ce courant photographique qui a fait de la rue
leur domaine de prédilection et qui se serve la photo pour montrer, telle quelle est, la vie de leurs
concitoyens avec ces moments sublimes comme le baiser de Doisneau ou Depardon, qui d’un bout à

l’autre de la planète photographiait les paysans, les commerces, les gens sans fard, toujours dans un
grand respect de l’autre. Il le faisait pour témoigner de la vie réelle des gens, ceux que l’on voit
rarement dans les médias, avec leur qualité, leurs défauts, mais quelle beauté et quelle poésie
derrière tout cela. Il sublimait cette réalité en une chose artistique parce vraie et touchante. Son
message fort ne peut que nous interpeller. Un autre grand photojournaliste qui, à travers ses photos
savait sublimer ce que l’on voudrait nous faire croire banal en de réels chef-d ’œuvres
photographiques est Cartier Bresson. De ces scènes de rue, de ces métiers d’autrefois, qui n’est pas si
loin, il a su les mettre en lumière et ainsi démontrer qu’il y avait une autre culture, un autre regard
qui s’opposait à la vision officielle, étatique de ce monde que l’on voulait nous faire croire comme
unique. C’est une force et on peut aller jusqu’à dire que c’est une contre-culture, très riche. Cette
école photographique en France s’est un peu éteinte, mais elle est en très vivante aux Etats-Unis
avec des photographes comme Alex Webb qui a publié des photos sur Istanbul ou Jane Atwwod qui a
fait des reportages sur les femmes en prison à travers le monde (elle a mis 9 années pour faire
aboutir son projet), sur la prostitution à Pigalle, ou les malades du SIDA, toujours avec une grande
humanité et beaucoup empathie pour « ses modèles ». J’ai vraiment une grande passion pour tous
ses photographes de rue, il dresse des tableaux saisissant de vérité et sont des témoins de l’évolution
de nos sociétés. Etant moi-même un peu photographe amateur, j’ai un projet sur la mort de
beaucoup de nos villages en Mayenne comme dans beaucoup de zones rurales. Mais, un projet
photo, cela demande du temps, il faut l’écrire sur le papier, dégagé les axes forts de son travail, voir
dans quelles directions on veut aller et faire par la suite tout un travail de repérages, bref c’est long
et cela prend du temps, mais c’est passionnant.
Lorsqu’une photographie conjugue composition, force du sujet et en appelle à l’émotion, elle peut
devenir LA photo et se hisser au rang d’image-icône. C’est le cas de « l’Afghane aux yeux verts » –
certainement la photographie la plus connue de Steve McCurry – prise en 1984 dans le camp de
réfugiés de Nasir Bagh, dans le nord du Pakistan. Elle fit la couverture du National Geographic de juin
1985. Depuis sa parution, elle est devenue une image symbolique des réfugiés afghans — fuyant
dans les pays voisins une guerre dévastatrice. « La jeune fille aux yeux verts », « La fille afghane » ou
encore « l’Afghane aux yeux verts » a touché le monde et fait aujourd’hui encore parler d’elle, de son
histoire et de la question des réfugiés de guerre.
Comme je vous le disais plus haut, je suis photographe amateur. Je fais à 95 % de la photographie
animalière. Pourquoi ? Pour témoigner de cette biodiversité qui disparait de nos campagnes sans que
personne sans émeuve réellement, sauf bien sûr, quelques « écolos » de services, mais surtout pas
nos gouvernements, quelques soient leur idéologie politique. Quand je photographie une renarde
avec un de ces petits, c’est pour montrer que le renard n’est pas nuisible (c’est d’ailleurs une notion
qui ne repose sur aucun postulat scientifique) que le fait de sa chasse systématique est un non-sens
et qu’il a toute sa place dans l’écosystème de nos campagnes. Il est à noter que depuis son
élimination systématique, on assiste à une augmentation de la maladie de Lyme, due à la
prolifération de mulot qu’il mangeait auparavant (le mulot étant portant sain de cette maladie).
Idem, lorsque je fais une photo d’une biche ou bien d’oiseaux, c’est pour montrer la beauté de cette
faune qui est en train de disparaitre très rapidement et de dire qu’il y a urgence à prendre des
mesures efficaces et cohérentes pour sauver la richesse faunistique de nos territoires. Nous sommes
un groupe de photographes au sein du CPIE de Mayenne et nous promouvons une photo éthique,
avec le moins possible de conséquences pour l’environnement, toujours dans le respect de l’animal
ou de son environnement. Ce n’est pas, malheureusement, le cas de tous les photographes
animaliers. Je voudrais pour finir vous présenter un grand de la photographie animalière Vincent
Munier. C’est un poète de l’image. Il a été en Arctique pour photographier les loups, au Tibet pour la
panthère des neiges où il était accompagné par Sylvain Tesson qui en a fait un livre merveilleux(à lire
absolument) Récemment, il a poussé un « coup de gueule » mémorable contre ces abrutis qui se

prétendent les meilleurs écolos de France, les chasseurs et qui vont tuer les lynx dans les Vosges
(c’est là qu’il habite, notre ami Vincent), alors que c’est un animal protégé, en grand danger de
disparition. Vincent Munier est un très grand de la photo animalière, vous l’aurez compris avec une
philosophie et une éthique irréprochable, bref un grand monsieur. A travers ces photos, il se bat pour
la survie et la protection de nombreuses espèces en situation critique, pour la protection de leur
milieu de vie et enfin pour nous les humains, prenions conscience, que nous devons partager cette
terre avec les autres espèces et, non pas, l’asservir uniquement pour assouvir notre frénésie de
consommation. Et puisque nous sommes en Mayenne, il faut aussi mettre en avant Éric Ménard,
photographe animalier qui a fait de sa passion son métier, ce qui n’est évident aujourd’hui. C’est un
très bon Je vous conseille fortement ces livres. De plus c’est quelqu’un qui aime partager sa passion.
En donnant des conférences, en faisant des expositions et en délivrant des formations.

Alors, convaincu que la photo est un art à part entière, oui parce elle est au cœur des préoccupations
et des évolutions sociétales. Elle est aussi un outil d’expression formidable. La technique s’apprend
très facilement, par contre le langage photographique nécessite un apprentissage plus long et aussi
un travail conséquent d’écriture pour bien cibler le message que l’on veut faire passer. Aller voir des
expos photos comme on va voir des expos de peintures afin d’acquérir une culture photo qui ne peut
que vous enrichir et vous permettre de cibler le message que vous voulez faire passer avant toute
chose
